Maximum precision for the best printing results

Smart surfaces, such as touch sensors or displays, are an integral part of future technologies like Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. In addition to traditional electronic components, printed functional electrical layers are becoming increasingly important. These layers are lightweight, flexible, and cost-efficient—provided that the printing process meets the highest standards.

Using a process developed by binder, these functions can be quickly and reliably printed onto three-dimensional and structured surfaces using pad printing.
High-precision printing plates, known as clichés, are required for the printing process. Until now, these have largely been produced using a chemical etching process. However, this process is limited in terms of edge sharpness.

For high-precision applications, however, the resolution of the printing plate is of crucial importance for the print result. Laser clichés enable a much finer screen than etched clichés. In contrast to etched clichés, different screen values and different cliché depths can be realised within a print motif. This enables a more targeted application of printing paste and therefore a more homogeneous layer thickness. This is a decisive factor for electronic applications such as sensors or conductor tracks.

Therefore, the binder Innovation- & Technologiezentrum uses a femtosecond laser to engrave steel clichés for printing sophisticated electronic functional layers.  Line widths of less than 80 µm can be achieved with an edge sharpness of less than 5 µm. Cliché depths of 2 - 50 µm can be realised as standard. The raster can be freely selected from a 60 to a 120 raster.

Another advantage of the laser process is the degree-free ablation of the plate steel. This increases the service life of the printing equipment used. Furthermore, the print designs can be quickly adapted to customer requirements and are also more cost-effective compared to etched clichés.
